Devotion Day #9: Walk in the spirit (Seeing Clearly in the Spirit)
I like to put stories to phrases when I am speaking to people, to help bring things to life in a more practical way. I mean who doesn’t love stories?
When we read Gal 5:16 which tells us that believers should “Walk in the Spirit”. This is like a person moving out of an old home and moving into a new one. How most when they do, say, “When I saw the house I just knew, it was the one.” So they have the confidence and surety to pack up all of their stuff from the house that they’ve been living in for years to move into this new house.
This is so beautiful because to walk in the Spirit, we must make a decision to move from the house we’ve been living in our whole lives up until we received Christ and move into another House. Another neighborhood also might I add. The neighborhood and home in which when we first encountered it knew “It was the perfect one for us”. The old house is the flesh. The fleshly ways, desires and reasoning. The new house is the Spirit. The fruits, the character of Christ, the reasoning and wisdom of God and everything that is contrary to the flesh. In scripture Jesus walked in the Spirit and didn’t fulfill the lust of the flesh when He refused to turn the bread to stone while He was fasting(Matt 4:1-4). Being in the Spirit gives you the wisdom, strength and insight to resist the devil(Jas 4:7). Paul walked in the Spirit while living uprightly before the Lord showing Godly character while facing numerous occasions of being beaten and cast into prison. Even one time while in prison He and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God (Being in the Spirit) and a miracle was brought forth. Their chains were loosed, and so were the chains of everyone around them. This showed the people and those in authority that God truly was the first authority and the only One True Living God(Acts 16:22-32).
Walking in the Spirit not only does good for us by keeping us on the desired path of the Lord, but it makes ways for us to be in tune with the Lord’s plans. Putting us in the right places at the right time so the Lord’s glory can be revealed. There are many who decide to never move into a new house (the Spirit), but you are probably one of the ones that truly has a burning desire to move into a new house and walk in the Spirit. Remember if you’re a new creature, new creatures have new habitats, new ways & new everything.
I encourage you today to read out loud and declare Galatians 5:16 over your life, spirit and mind, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Make it personal to you.
Lord, I choose to allow your Holy Spirit to reign in me and in my life from here on out. I choose to intentionally walk in the Spirit and not obey the lust of the flesh. I trade carnality for your Spirit, where my character and who I am will become more like you. As I walk in your spirit, use me for any task that you see fit. For your glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
